For the first time, women from the villages of Nuku, Cakova, Keteira, and Maloku converged at Naroi, Moala, to participate in a mini-craft show aimed at showcasing their handmade products and encouraging empowerment among participants.

Organized by the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection, the event offered an excellent avenue for women to share ideas, acquire new skills, and highlight their creativity and entrepreneurial talents.

The exhibitors showcased a diverse range of products, including traditional items such as sulu and Jamba, fine mats, handmade crafts, as well as fresh vegetables and root crops. This gathering celebrated the rich tradition of Fijian craftsmanship while also emphasizing the various talents and resourcefulness of women from the maritime islands.

The event was officiated by Draunidalo, the Principal of Yasayasa Moala College, who expressed profound appreciation for the participating women, acknowledging their essential role within society. He remarked, “Women are the backbone of our communities, and their contributions extend beyond their homes. Events like these empower them economically and socially, fostering self-reliance and innovation.”

Kalo Leba, the President of the Maloku Women’s Group, shared her gratitude for the opportunity. “Today, we woke up early, prepared our families, and made our way to Naroi to showcase our handicrafts. For the women of Maloku, we are selling sulu, Jamba, and honey products from our women’s group project,” she stated.

Unise Vosataki from Vadra highlighted the significance of this event for women residing in remote areas. She pointed out that many cannot afford to travel to Suva for larger expos, expressing her thanks for the government’s initiative that creates avenues for them to sell their goods. She further noted that the event helps women develop essential entrepreneurial skills and expand their networks.

This inaugural mini-craft show at Naroi reflects the Ministry’s dedication to empowering women in rural and maritime communities. By facilitating platforms for women to showcase their talents and earn an income, the government aims to promote gender equality and foster sustainable development within local communities.

This event marks a hopeful step toward greater recognition and support for women’s contributions, paving the way for increased opportunities and strengthened community ties in the future.
