For the first time, women from the villages of Nuku, Cakova, Keteira, and Maloku came together at Naroi, Moala, for a Women’s mini-craft show designed to highlight their handmade products and promote empowerment.
The event was organized by the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection and served as an important platform for women to exchange ideas, acquire new skills, and display their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit.
Participants showcased a variety of offerings, including traditional sulu and Jamba garments, fine mats, handmade crafts, and fresh vegetables and root crops. This gathering not only celebrated Fijian artisanal traditions but also underscored the varied talents and ingenuity of women in the maritime islands.
Draunidalo, the Principal of Yasayasa Moala College, officiated the event and commended the women for their contributions. He stated, “Women are the backbone of our communities, and their contributions extend beyond their homes. Events like these empower them economically and socially, encouraging self-reliance and innovation.”
Kalo Leba, President of the Maloku Women’s Group, expressed gratitude for the opportunity. “Today, we woke up early, prepared our families, and then made our way to Naroi to showcase our handicrafts. For the women of Maloku, we are selling sulu, Jamba, and honey products from our women’s group project,” she noted.
Unise Vosataki from Vadra stressed the significance of such events, especially for women in remote areas. “Some of us can’t afford to travel to Suva during the Women’s National Expo, but today we are grateful to the government for an opportunity to sell our handicrafts,” she explained. Vosataki highlighted that this event facilitates the development of entrepreneurial skills and strengthens networks among women.
The mini-craft show, the first of its kind in Naroi, highlighted the Ministry’s dedication to empowering women in rural and maritime regions. By providing opportunities for these women to showcase their talents and earn an income, the government aims to foster gender equality and promote sustainable community development.
This initiative is a hopeful step towards enhancing the economic independence of women in Fiji, nurturing their talents, and ensuring their voices are heard in their communities.
