Community leaders and representatives from Lau, Lomaiviti, Rewa, and Tailevu recently participated in a three-day workshop organized by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs. The workshop gathered 38 attendees, including 14 women, with the main objective of integrating climate adaptation actions into local planning through the development of Integrated Village Development Plans.

Participants received training on how to identify local hazards, assess risks, and adopt sustainable practices while validating training guidelines and incorporating traditional knowledge into climate adaptation strategies. This focus on local capacity building aligns with earlier initiatives aimed at enhancing community engagement in climate resilience efforts.

A critical component of the workshop was improving communication channels between village councils, provincial councils, and government entities. This initiative is geared toward creating effective local adaptation strategies and monitoring systems, which are essential for building community resilience against climate-related challenges.

The workshop emphasized the importance of involving women and youth in climate action, recognizing their vital contributions to enhancing community resilience. Participants were encouraged to harness their local resources, skills, and traditional wisdom to effectively tackle the impacts of climate change.

Reflecting on similar past initiatives in Fiji, the recurring theme of integrating community-led approaches into environmental sustainability continues to be crucial. These workshops not only equip participants with the necessary skills but also promote collaboration among various stakeholders, fostering a comprehensive and inclusive approach to addressing climate challenges.

The active engagement in climate adaptation represents a positive outlook as communities come together, strengthening their resilience and paving the way toward a more sustainable future.
