The government is being urged to establish constituency offices for elected ministers in each district, a suggestion recently advocated by locals during consultations on electoral law reforms held in Nadi. Navoci villager Taniela Momoelevu stated that having a designated representative in each district would ensure that the minister is familiar with the local challenges faced by the community, leading to more effective advocacy in Parliament.

This sentiment was echoed by Commissioner Prof. Wadan Narsey, who questioned attendees about the engagement of their elected representatives since the last election. He noted the importance of regular communication between MPs and their constituents, affirming the idea that constituency offices could facilitate this relationship.

The call for improved local representation aligns with broader discussions surrounding the electoral system in Fiji. Many have raised similar concerns about the disconnect between MPs and the communities they serve, advocating for a return to individual constituency-focused voting. This model, which was more prevalent in earlier elections, is seen as a way to enhance accountability among elected officials by ensuring voters can directly know and engage with the candidates they support.

Past discussions have also highlighted the necessity of reforming the electoral system to foster greater inclusivity and representation. Notably, constitutional lawyer Jon Apted and former Chief Justice Daniel Fatiaki have underscored the importance of strengthening the connection between representatives and their constituencies to create a more robust democratic framework.

As these vital consultations continue across Fiji, there remains hope that the advocacy for constituency offices and increased local representation will lead to meaningful reforms, empowering communities and ensuring that every voice is heard in governance. The active participation of citizens in this dialogue suggests a positive direction for the future of democracy in Fiji.
