The recently inaugurated Savusavu Mabe Pearl Oyster and Handicraft showroom in Cakaudrove aims to enhance the livelihoods of communities involved in Mabe pearl farming. The facility was officially opened by Alitia Bainivalu, the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, who highlighted its mission to support and uplift these coastal communities.
During the opening, Bainivalu emphasized the importance of collaboration between several organizations, including the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), the University of Sunshine Coast, the Ministry of Fisheries, and local Mabe pearl farmers in Vanua Levu. She recalled the longstanding partnership with ACIAR that began in the 1980s, which laid the groundwork for sustainable aquaculture practices in Fiji, particularly with initiatives such as the cultivation of giant clams at Makogai Island.
Since then, this partnership has expanded, including projects like the cultivation of freshwater prawns, reinforcing their dedication to fisheries development and community engagement. Bainivalu underscored that the establishment of the showroom is a significant step in promoting traditional skills and empowering local artisans while boosting economic activity.
The showroom will also serve as a venue for workshops aimed at training fisheries officers and community members in the transformation of raw shells into beautiful handicrafts. Bainivalu remarked that this initiative reflects a shared vision of community empowerment, environmental stewardship, and sustainable economic progress.
Through this initiative, the goal is not only to preserve cultural heritage but also to provide sustainable income opportunities, which can help coastal communities thrive while maintaining their rich cultural identity.
This positive development signifies hope and resilience for local communities, showcasing their ability to adapt and prosper through sustainable practices and partnerships.
Overall, the opening of the Savusavu Mabe Pearl and Handicraft showroom marks a significant milestone, promising to bring not only economic benefits but also a revival of traditional craftsmanship that can strengthen community bonds.
