Fisheries Minister Alita Bainivalu recently presented Cooperative Registrations to fishing groups from Namuana and Solovola villages in Kadavu, specifically the Wailiwa Cooperative Limited and Solovola Cooperative Limited. As part of the support for their fishing initiatives, essential fishing gear, including nets and cooler boxes, was also provided.
Naomi Naio from the Solovola Women’s Club expressed gratitude for this timely assistance, noting how it would significantly aid their livelihoods and facilitate preparations for the upcoming festive season as extended families return home.
In addition, through the Rural Housing Assistance Programme, housing materials valued at over $35,000 were delivered to Waqavesi Nariu. This initiative is part of ongoing support aimed at helping workers from the Vatukoula Gold Mine who have been impacted by redundancy.
Bainivalu encouraged cooperatives to take advantage of growth opportunities and expressed appreciation to Deputy Prime Minister and Trades Minister Manoa Kamikamica, along with Rural Development Minister Sakiasi Raisevu Ditoka, for their collaborative efforts in making these supportive initiatives a reality. The initiatives are seen as a significant step towards “building stronger, self-sustaining communities.”
This concerted effort not only underscores the importance of community resilience but also provides a hopeful perspective for these families as they prepare for both present challenges and future opportunities.
