Fisheries Minister Alita Bainivalu recently provided Cooperative Registrations to fishing groups from Namuana and Solovola villages, specifically the Wailiwa Cooperative Limited and Solovola Cooperative Limited. This initiative, aimed at bolstering their fishing activities, included the delivery of essential fishing gear such as nets and cooler boxes.

Naomi Naio of the Solovola Women’s Club spoke about the significant impact of this assistance, noting that it would enhance their livelihoods and facilitate preparations for the festive season, especially as extended families return to the village.

In addition to the fisheries support, housing materials valued at over $35,000 were delivered to Waqavesi Nariu through the Rural Housing Assistance Programme. This initiative is part of a broader support effort for workers affected by redundancy at the Vatukoula Gold Mine.

Bainivalu encouraged cooperatives to take advantage of growth opportunities and expressed gratitude to Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica and Rural Development Minister Sakiasi Raisevu Ditoka for their backing in these initiatives. She emphasized that these efforts contribute to building stronger, self-sustaining communities.

This assistance highlights a concerted effort to uplift local economies and foster community resilience, showcasing the strength of collaboration between government and local cooperatives. It’s a positive step toward empowering communities to become more self-reliant, especially during the festive season when family gatherings are significant.
