The Fisheries Minister, Alita Bainivalu, recently distributed Cooperative Registrations to fishing groups from the villages of Namuana and Solovola in Kadavu, specifically to the Wailiwa Cooperative Limited and Solovola Cooperative Limited. This initiative also included the provision of essential fishing gear, such as nets and cooler boxes, aimed at enhancing their fishing livelihoods.

Naomi Naio from the Solovola Women’s Club expressed gratitude for the timely assistance, which she believes will significantly support their livelihoods and facilitate preparations for the upcoming festive season, a time when extended families typically gather in the village.

In addition, the government delivered housing materials worth over $35,000 to Waqavesi Nariu as part of the Rural Housing Assistance Programme. This support aims to assist workers from the Vatukoula Gold Mine who have been affected by job redundancies, showing a commitment to support local communities during challenging times.

Minister Bainivalu encouraged cooperatives to leverage available opportunities for growth and acknowledged the contributions of Deputy Prime Minister and Trades Minister Manoa Kamikamica, as well as Rural Development Minister Sakiasi Raisevu Ditoka, in making these initiatives possible. She emphasized that these efforts are part of a broader strategy to build stronger, self-sustaining communities.

This support exemplifies the government’s dedication to community development and resilience, fostering hope for improved livelihoods and a brighter future for those in Kadavu and beyond.

In summary, this initiative not only strengthens local fishing economies but also enhances housing support for those adversely impacted by economic changes, contributing to the overall well-being and sustainability of these communities.
