Fisheries Minister Alita Bainivalu recently presented Cooperative Registrations to local fishing groups from Namuana and Solovola villages in Kadavu, specifically Wailiwa Cooperative Limited and Solovola Cooperative Limited. This initiative aims to bolster their fishing ventures by providing essential equipment, including nets and cooler boxes.
Naomi Naio, a member of the Solovola Women’s Club, expressed gratitude for the timely assistance, noting how it would significantly support their livelihoods, especially with the impending festive season and the return of extended families to the village.
Furthermore, as part of the Rural Housing Assistance Programme, housing materials valued at over $35,000 have been delivered to Waqavesi Nariu, supporting workers affected by redundancies at the Vatukoula Gold Mine.
Bainivalu urged cooperatives to embrace opportunities for growth, highlighting the critical support from Deputy Prime Minister and Trades Minister Manoa Kamikamica, as well as Rural Development Minister Sakiasi Raisevu Ditoka. She emphasized that these initiatives are fundamental to “building stronger, self-sustaining communities.”
This concerted effort showcases a commitment to uplifting local communities through cooperative support and assistance, particularly in challenging economic times. The provision of fishing gear and housing materials not only aims to enhance livelihoods but also reflects a proactive approach to community resilience.
In summary, the government’s focus on empowering cooperatives and assisting workers in need signals a positive direction for community development in the region. The initiatives are designed to foster sustainability, ensuring that communities are better equipped to face future challenges.
