Empowering Communities: $532k in Grants to Boost Inclusivity in Fiji

The Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs is emphasizing the need for transparency as it allocates over $532,000 in grants to support community projects across the Northern Division. This funding, which marks the highest number of grant applications recorded—78 in total—was highlighted by Minister Charan Jeath Singh, who underscored the importance of utilizing these funds responsibly to empower various community-based organizations.

Minister Singh articulated the dual focus of the grant initiative: firstly, to enhance the capabilities and sustainability of diverse organizations, and secondly, to foster social cohesion through cultural celebrations and activities. He pointed out that this disbursement is a significant step in the ministry’s efforts to champion inclusivity and social harmony within communities, particularly in light of previous initiatives that have sought to uplift minority groups.

Support will be directed to projects such as the renovation of facilities, fencing for places of worship, and the provision of equipment like musical instruments and sound systems. The minister called on those communities that missed out on funding to reapply in the next cycle, ensuring continuous opportunities for growth and development.

Acting permanent secretary Reshmi Kumari further detailed that applications for assistance also included accessibility improvements and water management, reflecting a comprehensive approach to community needs.

The involvement of diverse organizations, especially within multi-ethnic communities stretching from Bua to Taveuni, is set to create a positive ripple effect as these projects unfold. Previous funding initiatives—like the $1.5 million allocation following a 14-year hiatus—demonstrate a sustained governmental commitment to fostering an inclusive society that values diversity.

As communities harness these funds, there is hope for stronger ties and a more interconnected society where every member can thrive and contribute positively to the nation’s future. This proactive approach not only addresses immediate developmental needs but also lays the groundwork for long-term cooperative growth among Fiji’s diverse ethnic groups.
