The recently inaugurated Savusavu Mabe Pearl Oyster and Handicraft showroom in Cakaudrove is poised to enhance the livelihoods of local communities involved in Mabe pearl farming. The facility was formally launched by Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Alitia Bainivalu, who emphasized its role in supporting these coastal communities.

Minister Bainivalu highlighted the collaborative efforts between the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), the University of Sunshine Coast, the Ministry of Fisheries, and local Mabe pearl farmers from Vanua Levu. She noted that this partnership dates back to the 1980s with successful initiatives like the Giant Clams project on Makogai Island, which laid the groundwork for sustainable aquaculture practices in Fiji.

Expanding on these achievements, the Ministry initiated further projects in 2009 that included the cultivation of freshwater prawns, showcasing their commitment to sustainable fisheries and community engagement.

According to Bainivalu, the newly established showroom serves not only as a business opportunity but also as a vital platform for preserving traditional crafts, empowering local artisans, and stimulating economic growth. The unique handicrafts made from Mabe pearls will not only provide a source of income but also instill a sense of pride among the communities involved.

Additionally, the facility is set to organize workshops aimed at training fisheries officers and community members in transforming raw shells into beautiful handicrafts. This initiative, according to Bainivalu, embodies a unified vision of community empowerment, environmental responsibility, and sustainable economic development. It aims to enhance resilience and growth while protecting the cultural and natural heritage of these coastal communities.

This development is more than just a local business improvement; it is a hopeful sign of the potential for communities to thrive through sustainable practices that respect both their environment and cultural traditions.

Summary: The Savusavu Mabe Pearl and Handicraft showroom has opened to support local Mabe pearl farming communities, fostering economic growth, preserving traditional crafts, and promoting sustainable aquaculture practices in Fiji.
