Chiefs and their communities must actively contribute to the national economy rather than relying solely on government assistance, stated Ro Teimumu Kepa, Marama Roko Tui Dreketi, during the opening of the new Great Council of Chiefs’ complex in Nasese. She emphasized the importance of self-sufficiency and empowerment in addressing social issues such as homelessness, the drug epidemic, domestic violence, and mental health challenges, which disproportionately affect the iTaukei community.

Ro Teimumu raised important questions about how chiefs can effectively tackle these issues, noting the necessity for comprehensive training and strategic approaches. This call for collaboration mirrors sentiments previously expressed by the chair of the Great Council of Chiefs, Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, who has advocated for collective action in addressing these pressing social problems. At earlier meetings, he highlighted alarming statistics related to domestic violence, substance abuse, and educational disparities within the iTaukei community.

Moreover, the Minister for i-Taukei Affairs, Ifereimi Vasu, has stressed that economic empowerment is essential for the advancement of indigenous communities. Discussions about revitalizing traditional industries and addressing socio-economic barriers reflect a shared commitment to improving living standards. By establishing provincial economic units, the council aims to convert local resources into economic opportunities, fostering growth and resilience.

The convergence of these efforts illustrates a hopeful trajectory towards both economic and social rejuvenation for the iTaukei people. With the collaborative initiatives being undertaken, there is optimism for positive change as chiefs and communities unite to build a stronger future. This collective responsibility offers a pathway for fostering resilience and empowerment within the iTaukei community, ensuring a supportive environment for future generations.
