The chairman of the BA Provincial Council, Meli Tora, has announced the upcoming launch of a Diploma in Vanua Leadership program, which is aimed at empowering traditional leaders with modern skills and knowledge. This initiative will be a joint effort between the Fiji National University, the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC), and the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, set to commence in the first quarter of 2025.

In an interview conducted in Lautoka, Tora expressed his enthusiasm for the program, describing it as a “visionary concept” that will help the chiefs adapt to the realities brought about by tourism and modern society. He emphasized the importance of equipping leaders in the province of Ba with the necessary tools to maintain their cultural, social, and spiritual values while navigating contemporary challenges.

The one-year program, which is funded by the GCC, is particularly relevant in a time when many young individuals are dropping out of school. Tora highlighted this issue as a starting point for the leadership development conversation, aiming to create a pathway toward greater societal contribution and responsibility.

Further addressing concerns, Mr. Tora denied any speculation regarding the Yasana o Ba’s intention to form a political party for the upcoming general election, clarifying that such notions are unfounded.

This leadership initiative aligns closely with recent calls from Fiji’s newly inaugurated President, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, who has urged chiefs to embrace their roles actively and lead by example. President Ratu Naiqama’s emphasis on self-reliance, active participation, and education for strong leadership echoes the goals of the Vanua Leadership program and has the potential to foster a more engaged community.

Overall, these developments represent a hopeful movement towards revitalizing leadership norms within Fiji, emphasizing the importance of traditional values while embracing modern challenges. The collaboration between educational institutions and traditional leadership could serve as a strong foundation for nurturing future generations of leaders in the province and beyond.
