Empowering Change: Women’s Fund Fiji Champions Disability Rights

The Women’s Fund Fiji (WFF) is dedicated to advancing the human rights of individuals with disabilities in Fiji, having contributed over FJD $1.2 million since 2018.

During the commencement of the 2024 Biennial Meeting of the Fiji Disabled People’s Federation (FDPF) and the 40th anniversary of Advocacy and Awareness, Acting Executive Director of Women’s Fund Fiji, Vicky Yee, highlighted the positive impacts observed throughout the years.

“WFF takes pride in being a long-standing partner of FDPF. Our collaborative efforts have demonstrated tangible benefits across Fiji. FDPF’s initiatives have played a crucial role in empowering women with disabilities to take on leadership and decision-making roles,” Yee stated.

She mentioned that WFF’s backing has strengthened the leadership skills and active involvement of women and girls with disabilities in various decision-making arenas.

“A significant achievement was the ‘Revisioning Women Living with Disabilities’ project, which enabled women with disabilities to overcome obstacles and assume leadership positions. WFF has also facilitated the revival of inactive branches in Rakiraki, Ba, Lautoka/Yasawa, and Tavua, while establishing new branches in Koro and Gau,” she noted.

Earlier this year, 20 women with disabilities from Tavua took part in empowerment training aimed at enhancing their confidence and entrepreneurial abilities. This initiative is part of FDPF’s wider agenda to assist women with disabilities in attaining financial independence and leadership positions.

FDPF President, Lanieta Tuimabu, expressed appreciation for WFF’s collaboration, acknowledging the technical and financial resources provided that have fortified FDPF’s governance and empowered women and girls with disabilities.

“We must first recognize the incredible support from Women’s Fund Fiji (WFF), facilitated by the Australian Government, towards the Federation. WFF has been more than just a donor; they have been a genuine partner. This alliance is rooted in mutual respect and understanding,” she said.

“From the outset of our partnership, WFF embraced the principle of ‘Nothing about us without us,’ engaging closely with us in meaningful discussions to prioritize FDPF’s affiliates and operational areas.”

“This grant has proven to be one of the most effective, focusing on women and girls with disabilities while simultaneously reinforcing our organization. By providing capacity-building training in governance, finance, and communications, we have improved our internal structures and staffing, ensuring long-term sustainability.”
