Empowering Change: Women’s Fund Fiji Champions Disability Rights

The Women’s Fund Fiji (WFF) is dedicated to advancing the rights of individuals with disabilities in Fiji, having allocated over FJD $1.2 million since 2018. This commitment was reiterated during the opening of the 2024 Biennial Meeting of the Fiji Disabled People’s Federation (FDPF), which also celebrated its 40th anniversary of advocacy and awareness.

During the event, Vicky Yee, the Acting Executive Director of WFF, highlighted the positive outcomes achieved through their partnership. She expressed pride in WFF’s long-term collaboration with FDPF, noting the empowering impact of the federation’s programs on women with disabilities across Fiji, enabling them to assume leadership roles and participate in decision-making processes.

A significant achievement mentioned was the “Revisioning Women Living with Disabilities” initiative, which has helped women overcome obstacles and embrace leadership positions. WFF has also played a crucial role in revitalizing inactive FDPF branches in various regions and establishing new ones in Koro and Gau.

Earlier this year, 20 women with disabilities from Tavua took part in empowerment training aimed at enhancing their self-confidence and entrepreneurial abilities. This initiative is part of a comprehensive effort by FDPF to promote financial independence and leadership among women with disabilities.

FDPF President Lanieta Tuimabu expressed appreciation for WFF’s support, emphasizing the value of its technical and financial assistance in strengthening the federation’s governance and empowering women and girls with disabilities. She acknowledged the partnership with WFF as one built on mutual respect and understanding, reinforcing the principle of “Nothing about us without us.”

Tuimabu noted that the grant provided by WFF has been particularly impactful, not only benefiting women and girls with disabilities but also fortifying FDPF’s organizational capacity. Training in governance, finance, and communications has enhanced their internal structures and workforce, ensuring long-term sustainability.
