Women from the villages of Nasoki, Vadra, Keteira, and Cakova in Moala are embracing new opportunities through a transformative programme focused on financial literacy and entrepreneurship. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection with backing from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), aims to empower women with crucial business skills.
The programme’s primary objective is to equip participants with essential knowledge in bookkeeping, marketing, branding, inventory management, and effective saving strategies. Emphasizing collaborative learning, the training includes group discussions that enable women to share insights and learn from one another’s experiences.
Akemi Nagahara, a volunteer from JICA, highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating that financial literacy and efficient business management are foundational for building sustainable livelihoods. By empowering women to take charge of their financial futures, the programme seeks to enhance their quality of life and that of their families.
One participant, Jiajiana Vulaono from Cakova village, expressed her newfound confidence after the training. “Before, I struggled to start a small business,” she shared. “Now, I feel confident in keeping records and planning ahead. This knowledge will change how I support my family.”
Additionally, participants were informed about essential social welfare services, including various support programs and available assistance. The initiative also included awareness sessions by the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, Fiji Police, and the Department of Children as part of the Ministry’s broader efforts to promote gender equality, empower women, and alleviate poverty in the community.
This programme illustrates a powerful step towards building a hopeful future, as it not only equips women with vital skills but also fosters a stronger, more inclusive community for generations to come.
