The House of Sarah Safe Home (SSH) recently welcomed ten participants from the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) Regional Training Program, marking an important exchange aimed at improving support for survivors of domestic and gender-based violence. Participants from countries such as Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu engaged deeply with SSH staff, who shared valuable insights into the shelter’s establishment, operations, and the myriad challenges faced along the way.

The attendees showed a keen interest in understanding SSH’s journey, especially as they aspire to create similar safe shelters in their own regions. The discussions revolved around essential topics such as community partnerships, funding strategies, and operational protocols, and addressed common challenges, including resource constraints and cultural sensitivities that affect the provision of services.

Following the informative session, participants enjoyed a guided tour of the SSH facility, where they were impressed by the support systems set up for survivors, which include counseling spaces, secure accommodations, and child-friendly areas.

This event reflects a broader trend of increasing regional collaboration to advance protection services for survivors of violence. The FWCC has been making significant strides in the Pacific since the introduction of its regional training program in 1995, which has trained approximately 900 individuals in strategies to combat gender-based violence.

Moreover, ongoing governmental and community support for these initiatives, including remarks from key figures like Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Lynda Tabuya, emphasizes the critical importance of educational platforms in strengthening the capabilities of service providers working to eradicate gender-based violence. With growing regional interest in training programs, there is hope for the establishment of safer and more equitable communities across the Pacific.
