At a recent workshop in Serua, Maleli Seta of Navua emphasized the importance of treating women and girls with respect and dignity. As the coordinator of the GET (Gender & Equality Theology) workshop organized by the House of Sarah, he reiterated a powerful message: “Women and girls are not punching bags.” He advocated for a change in mindset to support women’s rights, stating that when women and girls are treated equally, they can thrive, contribute their talents, and take active roles in society.

During the workshop, Seta highlighted that violence against women is not a solution to problems and called for discussions about these critical issues in homes and communities. He expressed the necessity of love and understanding between genders, stating that workshops like his are vital, especially in rural areas, to educate young couples about the importance of tackling challenges peacefully.

Participants, including about 30 women and youth, engaged in meaningful dialogue about violence and gender equality, fostering a collective understanding of mutual respect. Seta noted the positive attendance of male representatives, highlighting the importance of their roles in addressing family dynamics and societal expectations.

This workshop aligns with ongoing efforts in Fiji to promote gender equality and discourage domestic violence. Similar initiatives have been championed by leaders across the country who stress the need for men to actively engage in these discussions, as observed in workshops and dialogues led by various officials, including the Prime Minister and the Minister for Women.

The ongoing discourse aims to create awareness and foster a culture where violence is not tolerated, and respect for all individuals is paramount. With sustained commitment to education and community engagement, there is hope for a more respectful and equal society where women can flourish alongside men, contributing to the overall well-being of families and communities.
