Significant strides are being made in the fight against gender-based violence in the Pacific, highlighted by a newly initiated two-week training program in the Cook Islands. Spearheaded by the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) in partnership with Punanga Turuturu Itivaine, this initiative is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize the various forms of violence against women and girls, explore their root causes, and address the profound impacts on families and communities.
The training program is facilitated by Shamima Ali, the FWCC Coordinator, who emphasizes the importance of not only identifying instances of violence but also implementing prevention strategies and survivor-centered counseling. This approach focuses on ensuring that support provided is grounded in respect for human rights. The FWCC has played a pivotal role in combating gender-based violence since its establishment in 1996, following the formation of the Pacific Women’s Network Against Violence Against Women in 1992, which has since broadened its impact across more than ten countries.
This recent training initiative in the Cook Islands reflects a trust in FWCC’s expertise, as noted by Ali, who highlighted the shifting challenges faced in efforts to prevent gender-based violence. Backing from Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been crucial over the past 30 years, providing long-term support to bolster women’s rights initiatives throughout the Pacific region.
The training in the Cook Islands represents a promising advancement in empowering communities to effectively combat violence against women.
