Twenty-four street dwellers in Lautoka are set to embark on a new training program at the Fiji National University Namaka starting next week. This initiative follows their recent completion of the Seed of Success and Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights program.
Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru addressed the street dwellers, emphasizing that the government genuinely cares for them and views them as potential future leaders of the country. “Do not underestimate yourselves; trust in your abilities and embrace your unique talents as they will be your strength,” he urged. He affirmed the government’s commitment to support these individuals as they strive for successful futures, promising that they would receive resources and opportunities aimed at helping them secure employment.
This program aligns with previous initiatives aimed at empowering vulnerable populations in Fiji. For example, similar efforts have been seen with the Australian Pacific Training Coalition (APTC), which has provided various youth training programs that enhance employability, such as hospitality and caregiving certifications.
By investing in education and skill development, these programs contribute to a brighter future not just for the participants but also for their communities. This training initiative serves as a hopeful reminder of the transformative power of education and support, particularly for those who have experienced hardships.
The collaborative efforts of government and local organizations underscore a commitment to uplift marginalized communities, paving the way for new opportunities and positive change in society.
