Empowering Change: New Initiatives for Suva’s Street Youth

Spread the love

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has recently conducted a profiling of 140 young individuals living on the streets of Suva, which includes 40 women and eight children under the age of 10. This initiative, led by Minister Jese Saukuru, involved a high-level meeting with Social and Child Protection teams aimed at creating collaborative plans focused on rehabilitation and diversion pathways for those identified in the profiling.

The discussions also set the stage for a similar exercise to be carried out in the Western Division. A working group, consisting of the Permanent Secretaries from both ministries, will oversee the progress and implementation of these initiatives.

Among the insights shared during the meeting, representatives from Inspire Pacific and Kauwai Home of the Salvation Army highlighted their recently concluded rehabilitation program, which supported 17 youths and their families. This successful model is being considered for expansion on a national scale.

Community leaders also contributed innovative strategies to the discussions. Well-known musician Seru Serevi spoke about his efforts in engaging street dwellers through music, while rugby legend Seremaia Bai shared his experiences working with 500 children and youth in his rugby academy, providing a framework for supporting at-risk young individuals.

Both ministries express a strong commitment to working with existing programs and expanding similar initiatives throughout different divisions. Their collective focus is on fostering a holistic and inclusive strategy to tackle the challenges faced by vulnerable youth.

This initiative brings hope for a brighter future for the disadvantaged youth in Fiji, showcasing how collaboration and community engagement can lead to meaningful change and support for those in need.
