Glenda Laisave’s inspiring journey in the hospitality sector showcases the significance of ambition and resilience. At the young age of 22, she stepped into the role of Team Leader at the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay, where she currently excels as the Food & Beverage Venues Manager. Her extensive background of over 11 years in tourism includes notable experiences at Wyndham Resort Fiji and Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa. Laisave firmly believes that leadership is defined not by age or experience, but by dedication and the drive to excel.

Encouraging her team of 54 associates to reach for their goals, she emphasizes that age should not be a limitation to professional growth. This philosophy is echoed by fellow female leaders in hospitality, such as Irinieta Naqolo, Assistant Manager at the Sheraton Fiji Resort, who highlights the importance of empowering women within the industry.

Support has played a vital role in Laisave’s career trajectory, particularly from her husband, who champions progressive gender roles. “Having a partner who believes in me has boosted my confidence significantly,” she remarks, underscoring how essential support systems are for women balancing career and family.

Laisave’s passion for hospitality took root during her part-time job at a restaurant in Australia. After returning to Fiji, her ambition and hard work swiftly led her to a position at Hilton Fiji Resort, laying the foundation for her current success. She credits her mother, a pioneering single parent in hotel management, as her inspiration.

Facing skepticism about her abilities due to her youth and gender has only fueled Laisave’s motivation to succeed. She recalls encounters where guests doubted her capabilities, which she turned into opportunities to demonstrate her competence. “Confidence and competence often speak louder than appearances,” she advises.

With International Women’s Day approaching, Laisave sees it as a moment to celebrate the advancement of women breaking barriers in leadership roles, particularly in male-dominated fields. She reflects on the progress made and advocates for continued efforts to uplift women’s voices in leadership, drawing from her successful journey as an example.

Laisave’s story not only captures her personal achievements but also represents a broader movement towards empowerment and inspiration for young women pursuing leadership roles. It embodies hope and determination, illustrating that with a supportive environment and dedicated effort, young women can achieve substantial success and inspire future generations.
