In a recent workshop held at the Fiji National University (FNU), final-year students were strongly encouraged to take a stand against violence and discrimination rather than remaining passive bystanders. The event, organized in conjunction with the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC), focused on Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI), equipping future graduates with essential knowledge and tools to foster inclusive and equitable workplaces.

FNU counsellor Ronika Deo highlighted the importance of this initiative at a time when domestic violence cases are on the rise nationwide, urging students to grasp the principles of GEDSI and apply them in their future careers. “GEDSI means equal opportunity for all — regardless of gender, disability, or social standing. It is crucial for our students to understand the realities of increasing violence against women and to recognize their role in changing this narrative,” she emphasized.

At the workshop, FWCC advocacy officer Stephanie Dunn reinforced the concept that individual lives are interconnected and that each student could be a catalyst for change. “One person’s life is everybody’s business,” Dunn insisted, calling on the younger generation to raise their voices against injustice. She attributed the perpetuation of violence to outdated patriarchal systems and stressed that the current generation possesses the power to dismantle such structures.

This educational intervention aligns with FNU’s commitment to addressing violence against women and girls, as outlined in its GEDSI Strategy and Action Plan for 2024–2026. The university seeks not only to cultivate a safe and respectful community but to empower all individuals—particularly women—as key drivers of Fiji’s development across various sectors, including education, business, health, and governance.

FNU’s proactive stance and the proactive engagement of its students signal a hopeful path forward, as collective efforts can contribute significantly to reducing gender-based violence and promoting equality. The university’s initiatives serve as a beacon of hope for a future where all individuals can thrive in dignity and safety.

FNU’s commitment to these pressing issues reflects the growing awareness and dedication required to instigate social change, ensuring that both present and future generations advocate for a society free from violence and discrimination.
