The Ministry of Youth and Sports has taken significant steps to assist vulnerable young people in Suva through a comprehensive profiling initiative that identified 140 individuals on the streets, including 40 women and eight children under 10. Minister Jese Saukuru led a high-level meeting with Social and Child Protection teams to establish collaborative strategies for rehabilitation and diversion pathways for the youths identified in the profiling.
Plans are also underway for a similar exercise in the Western Division, reflecting a commitment to expanding support for at-risk youth across Fiji. A working group consisting of Permanent Secretaries from both ministries will ensure the effective implementation of these initiatives.
During discussions, organizations like Inspire Pacific and Kauwai Home of the Salvation Army contributed valuable insights from a successful rehabilitation program that supported 17 youths and their families, serving as a model for potential nationwide expansion.
Community leaders were also integral to the meeting. Renowned musician Seru Serevi shared his efforts engaging street dwellers through music, aiming to foster connection and rehabilitation. Meanwhile, rugby legend Seremaia Bai highlighted his work through his rugby academy, which has helped 500 children and youth, offering a framework for further outreach to vulnerable populations.
Both ministries have dedicated themselves to collaborating with existing programs to enhance rehabilitation efforts and broaden similar initiatives across different divisions. This comprehensive strategy underscores a commitment to addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by youth while fostering a hopeful and supportive environment for their development.
Overall, this proactive approach not only addresses immediate needs but also represents a larger vision for empowerment and recovery for young individuals facing difficulties. The collaboration of government entities and community leaders signals a positive movement toward meaningful change and support for at-risk youths in Fiji, emphasizing the importance of compassion and community involvement.
