Empowering Change: Celebrating MSME Innovators

World MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises) Day was officially observed on June 27th, drawing attention to the crucial role these enterprises play in fostering innovation, creating jobs, and promoting sustainability. This year’s theme was “Small Business, Big Change.” In light of this, members of the Building at Sunset community shared their motivations for pursuing entrepreneurship and making significant changes in their lives.

Fina Bakani Fisher, the owner of Comfy Stays, operates a short-term rental business featuring two properties: a two-bedroom accommodation at Laucala Beach Estate for $200 per night and a five-bedroom rental in Pacific Harbour priced at $750 per night. Her initial motivation to start the business was to balance staying at home with her children while contributing financially, which later evolved into a desire for greater financial independence. She looks forward to expanding her business beyond its current Facebook presence with a new website launch.

Sonam Nair, managing director of Total Hygiene Solutions, started her cleaning business during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, driven by commitments from local businesses seeking cleaning services. The company, currently operating in the Suva-Nausori corridor, has plans to expand into other areas. Nair’s motivation stemmed from her personal aspirations and the inspiration drawn from witnessing other women succeed in business. The urgent need for health and hygiene during the pandemic played a significant role in her decision to enter this field.

Veniana Ravesi, founder of Ravesi’s Kinetic Fitness, discovered her passion for fitness in high school, which led to a decade-long commitment to health and wellness. Her experiences highlighted the transformative nature of fitness, shaping her desire to help others improve their lives. With numerous certifications in personal training, group fitness, swimming, and judo, Ravesi established her fitness center to provide a supportive environment for clients to thrive.

Kelera Lomaloma Mataika, founder of Atelier 153, is dedicated to sustainable construction and innovation. Her initiative, the Innovation in Construction Hub, aims to leverage local expertise and resources to address infrastructure challenges in Fiji. Mataika is passionate about collaborating within the construction industry to drive innovation for new projects.

The contributions of these entrepreneurs underscore the significant impact of MSMEs on local economies and communities.
