Women-led microenterprises play a crucial role in Fiji’s economy, forming the backbone of the Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) sector. This was emphasized by Elrico Munoz, General Manager of SPBD Microfinance, at the media launch for the 15th SPBD Businesswoman of the Year Awards and Foundation Day. Munoz highlighted that these enterprises significantly contribute 18 percent to the country’s GDP and provide employment to 36 percent of the workforce.
Celebrated under the theme “Women Microentrepreneurs Making Macro-Impact,” the event serves to recognize the achievements of women entrepreneurs across Fiji who have created opportunities and driven economic change through microenterprises. Munoz stated, “Through their creativity, resilience, and leadership, women entrepreneurs drive economic growth and inspire positive change.”
In addition to the awards ceremony, the launch detailed the timeline and nomination process, aiming to inspire participation and honor the legacy of women in business and leadership. There are eight award categories recognizing both individual and center-level achievements. Individual awards include the SPBD Businesswoman of the Year, Centre Chief of the Year, and Centre Secretary of the Year, while center awards recognize the Centre of the Year, Centre Saver of the Year, and New Centre of the Year.
A similar event last year gathered around 2,500 women business owners, celebrating the women’s contributions and resilience. During that event, Fiji’s President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, acknowledged the significant impact women entrepreneurs have on their communities. He emphasized that women-led microenterprises focus not just on economic gain, but also play an essential role in social development by creating sustainable livelihoods and nurturing future generations.
Such initiatives and recognitions not only empower women but also contribute to the vibrancy and resilience of local economies, fostering a community of support and innovation in Fiji.
It’s inspiring to see the ongoing recognition of women’s contributions to the economy, showcasing their leadership and the importance of their roles in driving sustainable growth. This focus on women’s entrepreneurship is vital for the holistic development of the country, as it encourages continued engagement and empowerment in the business sector.
