Madhu Lata, a resilient woman and dedicated cane farmer from Nagigi, Labasa, has become a compelling example of strength and perseverance. Since the passing of her husband in 2014, she has successfully managed the family farm and cared for her three children, showcasing remarkable determination in the face of adversity.

On Mother’s Day, Lata opened up about the challenges she has encountered, acknowledging the daily struggles of running the farm without assistance. “I have to look after the farm; I have to look after the children, I’m facing a lot of problems because nobody is helping with my farm work, so I have to hire laborers. But I keep going,” she expressed, highlighting her unwavering spirit.

Lata’s agricultural efforts go beyond sugarcane; she also cultivates rice, manages a poultry farm, and grows vegetables, often undertaking the labor-intensive tasks herself. She emphasizes the importance of empowerment and encourages women to recognize that success is achievable without reliance on others. This is especially poignant given the unfortunate cases of domestic violence reported in recent times, as she urges women to pursue their goals with passion and strength.

In a similar vein, Olivia Cavuka, another prominent figure in the agricultural community, has demonstrated resilience as she transitioned into managing a family-operated farm following her husband’s death. Both Lata and Cavuka’s stories reveal a shared narrative among Fijian women who take on significant agricultural roles despite their challenges. They highlight the importance of community support networks, with Olivia benefiting from organizations like the South Pacific Business Development (SPBD), which aids women entrepreneurs.

Like Lata, Miliana Fong, a lecturer and sugarcane farmer, and Saleshni Devi, a noted entrepreneur in the farming sector, also embody this spirit of resilience. By sharing their experiences, these women not only inspire their families but also encourage other women in Fiji to embrace agricultural opportunities and bolster their economic independence.

As they navigate their farming journeys, these women contribute significantly to the agricultural landscape of Fiji and inspire a hopeful message that personal resolve and community support can facilitate growth and success.

Their stories exemplify the power of resilience and the capacity for women to thrive in traditionally male-dominated fields, inspiring others to strive for independence and fulfillment in both their personal and professional lives.
