Women have been urged to support young individuals who aspire to launch their own businesses.
Losana Marama, a representative from West Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, addressed attendees at a women’s conference held at Gurukul Primary School in Saweni, Lautoka, emphasizing the benefits of the Young Entrepreneurship Scheme (YES) program.
Marama explained that the scheme aims to provide grants to young entrepreneurs with innovative and viable business ideas. The Ministry of Commerce, Trade, Tourism, and Transport offers financial assistance of up to $30,000 for entrepreneurs aged 18 to 40 to develop or expand their creative business concepts.
“If your child has innovative and creative ideas, they can access this funding,” Marama stated. She noted that many young people draw inspiration from successful business models on platforms like TikTok, which might not yet be implemented in Fiji. They can approach the scheme for help in securing funding.
The grant amount is capped at $30,000, and it is categorized as a grant, rather than a loan, meaning it does not require repayment. Marama encouraged parents to recognize and nurture their children’s skills, stating, “If you see a talent in your child, try to motivate and empower them.”
She highlighted the government’s acknowledgment of the vital role young entrepreneurs play in the economy’s growth. “As parents and guardians, we must motivate and encourage our children to become job creators instead of job seekers,” she added.
The West Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) office is located at Rogorogoivuda House in Lautoka.
