The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre is advocating for a transformation in societal attitudes from judgment to empathy following the distressing discovery of an abandoned newborn at Fiji National University. Coordinator Shamima Ali highlighted the urgent need for supportive measures and safe spaces for women who may be facing unwarranted social pressure related to unplanned pregnancies.

Ali emphasized the necessity of providing women with options and urged society to show compassion instead of condemnation. She wrote, “This is wrong. Society has to stop condemning women and show more compassion, kindness, and support.” This call for empathy comes in response to a surge of discussions on social media regarding the situation, which often lean towards criticism rather than understanding.

The Silver Linings of Support: Ali also encouraged educational institutions to offer robust support for young women, advocating for open discussions around topics of pregnancy and contraception. She stresses that the stigma surrounding single motherhood must be lifted, promoting a nurturing environment for pregnant women and mothers. The recent incident echoes broader issues regarding women’s rights and reproductive healthcare in Fiji, as highlighted by organizations like the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement. These organizations advocate for systemic changes to ensure no woman feels isolated during a crisis.

Fiji National University has also expressed deep remorse over the incident, reiterating their commitment to assist both the mother and child and providing counseling services to support those involved. This collective community response illustrates a growing awareness of the importance of empathy in addressing such challenging circumstances.

The situation has sparked meaningful conversations about child welfare and the necessity of societal support systems. The hope remains that with increased awareness and a collaborative community approach, similar tragedies can be mitigated in the future, ensuring a safer, more supportive environment for mothers and their children.
