Shane Stevens, a former member of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Counter Revolutionary Warfare (CRW) unit, was welcomed at the 24th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Nabua. During the ceremony, Stevens shared poignant moments alongside the families of the CRW soldiers who lost their lives during the ill-fated mutiny attempt.

Although he chose not to engage with the media at the event, Stevens played a significant role in the ceremony focused on reconciliation and healing, which was led by RFMF Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai. In September this year, Stevens was granted a Presidential pardon after serving over 21 years of a life sentence for incitement to mutiny. The Mercy Commission noted that Stevens had demonstrated positive behavior throughout his incarceration, earning the recommendation for his release from Naboro Prison.

Alongside Stevens, coup leader George Speight was also released. The event was attended by notable figures, including former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and ex-Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho, who were invited by current Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. Although still serving their sentences, they were temporarily released to participate in the anniversary event and the traditional apology ceremony by the military.

This milestone marks a significant step towards healing and reconciliation for those affected by the past conflicts in Fiji. The emphasis on forgiveness and restoration highlights the community’s desire to move forward together, acknowledging tragic histories while striving for a united future.

In summary, the event and Stevens’ participation reflect a broader narrative of reconciliation in Fiji, showcasing the significance of addressing past grievances for a more harmonious society.
