Shane Stevens, a former member of the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces Counter Revolutionary Warfare (CRW) unit, attended the recent 24th anniversary celebration of the Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Nabua. At the event, he experienced poignant moments as he remembered the fallen CRW soldiers who lost their lives during an attempted mutiny.
While Mr. Stevens chose not to speak to the media, he played a significant role in the reconciliation and restoration ceremony led by RFMF Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai. His presence at the event comes shortly after he was granted a Presidential pardon in September from a life sentence for inciting mutiny, following 21 years, 8 months, and 20 days in prison. The Fiji Mercy Commission recognized his positive rehabilitation during his incarceration, which influenced the decision for his release.
He was released alongside George Speight, the leader of the 2000 coup. Additionally, former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and former Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho were invited to the ceremony but were unable to attend due to their ongoing prison sentences. Their invitation came at the request of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who sought their temporary release to partake in the anniversary and the military’s traditional apology presentations.
This event represents a step towards healing and reconciliation for those affected by past conflicts in Fiji, highlighting the importance of moving forward while honoring the memories of those who have been lost.
The gathering serves as an opportunity for reflection and signifies a hopeful commitment to reconciliation among those involved in Fiji’s turbulent history.
