The Emmy Awards have made a significant comeback in viewer ratings, continuing to recover from record lows in previous years. According to Nielsen data, the Nate Bargatze-hosted 77th Primetime Emmy Awards drew approximately 7.42 million viewers on CBS, marking an 8% increase from last year and the highest since 2021. This rebound can be attributed to several factors, including the evening’s notable winners like “The Studio,” “Adolescence,” “The Pitt,” and Stephen Colbert, who received cheers and applause from the audience at the Peacock Theater.
The Emmy Awards are known to rotate their broadcast between four networks annually, and this year, CBS benefitted from having an NFL game as a lead-in in several parts of the West. Nonetheless, the awards managed to captivate viewers despite airing in competition with another national NFL game on NBC. The Emmys have consistently faced this challenge, as the NFL remains a dominant force in television ratings, unlike other award shows.
Looking back, the pandemic-stricken 2020 Emmys on ABC recorded an all-time low of 4.3 million viewers, exacerbated by a lack of in-person attendance, but the following year’s show saw a resurgence. NBC’s 2022 telecast again saw a drop to 5.9 million viewers, prior to the significant dip in January 2024 due to industry-wide strike impacts. Despite these fluctuations, the latest ratings highlight a positive shift in audience engagement, restoring some optimism for the awards’ continued relevance.
The Emmy Awards continue to trail behind bigger shows like the Oscars and Grammys, and even the Golden Globes, regarding viewership. However, the event still hosts a wide array of nominees and brings recognition to prestige series that may not necessarily attract large audiences. Past juggernauts like “Seinfeld” and “ER” were able to draw extensive viewership alongside their Emmy successes, a feat not yet matched by recent award-winning shows like “The Studio” or “The Pitt.”
Overall, the upward trend in Emmy ratings illustrates the award show’s ability to adapt and continue resonating with its audience. While faced with challenges from both the entertainment industry’s evolving landscape and formidable competition from live sports, the Emmys maintain their status as a key platform celebrating television excellence.
