Psychological thriller “Severance” from Apple TV+ and HBO’s crime drama “The Penguin” led the nominations for the upcoming Emmy Awards, claiming significant recognition within the television industry. “Severance” topped the list with an impressive 27 nominations, earning a spot for the prestigious best drama award alongside series like the Star Wars adaptation “Andor” and “The White Lotus.”

In a strong showing, “The Penguin,” which features Colin Farrell and is set in the DC Comics universe, followed closely with 24 nominations. It will compete for best limited series against Netflix’s “Adolescence” and others.

Interestingly, Apple TV+’s “The Studio,” starring Seth Rogen as an anxious film executive, and HBO’s “The White Lotus,” revolving around murder and intrigue at a luxurious resort, each garnered 23 nominations. Rogen expressed his disbelief at the show’s success in a statement, declaring, “What the heck?! We never thought this would happen.”

On the comedy front, returning champion “Hacks” and previous winner “The Bear” were among the nominees alongside new entries such as “Nobody Wants This” and “Abbott Elementary.” The 23 nominations for “The Studio” matched the record for a single comedy season, previously set by “The Bear.”

The ceremony, which will reveal the Emmy winners, is scheduled to take place in Los Angeles on September 14, hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze.

In a broader context, the growing list of nominations highlights a shift within the television industry, where traditional honorees are being challenged by the impressive performances and storytelling seen in the streaming services. HBO led all networks with a historic 142 nominations, while Walt Disney garnered 136, and Netflix followed with 120. Apple also celebrated its highest total with 81 nominations since starting its streaming platform in 2019.

“Severance” uniquely explores the lives of office workers who undergo a procedure to compartmentalize their work and personal identities, making for a thought-provoking narrative resonating with contemporary workplace dynamics.

This year’s Emmy nominations reflect the vibrant creativity and innovative storytelling present across diverse platforms, offering positive reassurance of the resilience of the television industry, especially during its ongoing evolution in the streaming landscape.
