Efforts to assist communities in maritime regions affected by dry weather have been announced by Divisional Commissioner Apolosi Lewaqai. He highlighted that the dry conditions have particularly impacted the islands of Vatulele, Mamanuca, and Yasawa. In response, the government has initiated a water carting operation, having already started deliveries to Vatulele. Plans are in place to extend this service to Yasawa and Mamanuca.
Mr. Lewaqai emphasized the urgency in providing support, especially to schools that are currently hosting external examinations. He mentioned that local communities have been proactive in addressing their water needs by utilizing the recent heavy rains to fill tanks and buckets, an encouragement for self-sufficiency in times of scarcity.
Additionally, preparation efforts have also focused on public safety as the cyclone season approaches. Mr. Lewaqai explained the importance of community-based training sessions, which involve local stakeholders in educating residents about disaster preparedness and hygiene. This includes guidance from the Ministry of Health and other authorities on how to maintain community cleanliness, particularly in flood-prone areas.
He pointed out the ongoing challenges of drainage overflow caused by debris, especially in urban areas, which necessitates continuous awareness and action from community members to mitigate flooding and related health risks. The collaborative approach adopted by his team involves engaging with various ministries to ensure that vulnerable communities are well-informed and prepared.
This initiative not only aims to alleviate immediate water shortages but also fosters long-term resilience among communities facing environmental challenges.
