A medical emergency on the container ship CMA CGM Byblos led to an immediate request for assistance in Fiji, where a crew member required urgent medical evacuation. The Fiji Navy’s Joint Rescue Coordination Centre was notified and efficiently facilitated the transport of the patient to safety.

Upon arrival, the clinical team was supported by St John Ambulance, which provided ground transportation to a hospital for further care following the successful evacuation of the crew member. This incident not only highlights the crucial role of maritime emergency services but also reflects the collaborative efforts between various organizations to ensure the safety of those at sea.

The CMA CGM Byblos, an LNG-powered vessel, was subsequently reported to be en route to Melbourne, Australia, traveling at a speed of 16.1 knots and is expected to arrive on June 28.

Similar to previous successful operations by the Fiji Navy, such as medical evacuations and rescues of distressed vessels, this event reinforces the importance of preparedness and quick response capabilities in maritime emergencies. The ongoing cooperation among emergency response services contributes to maritime safety not just in Fiji but throughout the Pacific region.

This incident serves as a reminder of the shared commitment to safeguarding the well-being of seafarers and the importance of having robust emergency protocols in place. The successful outcome of this operation brings a hopeful perspective to maritime safety practices.
