Opposition Member of Parliament Parveen Kumar has urgently called on the Prime Minister to allocate emergency funds to aid in the restoration of the historic Shiv Temple in Samabula, which was the target of vandalism last week. Kumar, also the president of TISI Sangam Fiji, expressed that the attack has inflicted deep emotional and spiritual distress on thousands of devotees nationwide.
The Shiv Mandir, an important spiritual and historical landmark, is recognized as the foundation site of the Sanatan Dharam Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, which dates back to 1958, although its roots extend to the 1920s. Kumar reminded the public that the temple was constructed by the Girmitiya ancestors and has since become a symbol of religious devotion, cultural identity, and unity in the community.
In light of the attack, Kumar has appealed to the government for funding through the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs or another suitable channel to assist with temple repairs and the replacement of the damaged statue. He acknowledged the swift response of law enforcement, who have arrested a suspect in connection to the vandalism, underscoring the need for justice in such a profound matter.
Echoing Kumar’s call for action, community leaders have stressed the importance of preserving places of worship across Fiji, following a disturbing trend of vandalism targeting religious sites, including a recent incident at Vunicuicui Shiv Mandir. Leaders from various faiths are advocating for increased protective measures and unity among different religious groups to counteract intolerance.
While these incidents pose challenges, they also create opportunities for dialogue and cooperation, fostering greater understanding among Fiji’s diverse cultural and religious communities. Overall, there is a hopeful sentiment that by coming together in solidarity, communities can reinforce their commitment to mutual respect and coexistence.
The collective response to this distressing incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of safeguarding Fiji’s rich tapestry of traditions and values, as leaders continue to encourage open conversations about tolerance and communal bonds, paving the way towards a peaceful and united future.
