The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has opened three evacuation centers in the Central Division to accommodate residents affected by flooding in Vatuwaqa and Wailoku, Suva. The families seeking shelter are currently staying at St Marcellin Primary School, Marist Champagnat Institute, and Marata Hall in Wailoku.
NDMO has cautioned residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas to be vigilant, as heavy rainfall overnight has resulted in elevated river levels and flooding. The National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has also been partially activated, and NDMO is collaborating with relevant authorities to keep track of the situation.
The intense rains have caused flooding in various towns and communities, disrupting minor roads and bridges. NDMO reported that some regions are facing landslides and traffic disruptions, prompting them to advise the public against unnecessary travel in these affected areas.
The safety of the public is a top priority, and individuals needing to relocate to higher ground are encouraged to reach out to the Fiji Police Force or the National Fire Authority for assistance. NDMO is also warning people to avoid attempting to cross or swim in flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and walkways with water levels above the knee.
This advice is critical for ensuring personal safety and reducing the risk of life-threatening situations for both the public and first responders. The floodwaters may contain harmful contaminants, and the public is urged to avoid contact when possible. It is essential to remain aware of the risks of leptospirosis, typhoid, Dengue Fever, and diarrhea following heavy rainfall.
