Embracing Empathy: The True Spirit of Ramadan and Eid Celebrations

As the month of Ramadan approaches its conclusion, Abdul Rasheed, an Urdu teacher at Nasinu Muslim College, underscores the vital role of empathy, compassion, and community solidarity. He teaches that the act of fasting serves as a powerful reminder of the struggles faced by the less fortunate, allowing individuals to connect deeply with those experiencing poverty.

Rasheed elaborates that through fasting, individuals can physically experience hunger and thirst, which broadens their understanding of the daily challenges faced by many. He articulates that Eid, the celebration following Ramadan, should be seen as an opportunity to extend kindness and support to all members of the community, regardless of their background. He shares, “When we fast, we understand what it feels like to go without food and water, which opens our hearts to the needs of others. Eid is a celebration of humanity and brotherhood. It’s not just about religion; it’s about helping one another and fostering compassion.”

Moreover, the Fiji Muslim League has mentioned that efforts will be made to sight the new moon to determine if Eid-ul-Fitr will be observed next Monday or Tuesday.

This call for compassion and unity resonates with the spirit of Ramadan, which has been highlighted across various parts of the nation. As noted in previous celebrations, Ramadan serves not only as a time for fasting but also as a means to develop a deeper sense of empathy for those experiencing hardship, fostering a hopeful perspective toward a more inclusive society. The community is encouraged to embrace these values of kindness and support, reinforcing the belief that through compassion, we can build a more cohesive and understanding future.

The essence of Rasheed’s message is that kindness and unity, particularly during special occasions like Eid, can lead to meaningful positive changes in our society.
