World MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises) Day was commemorated on June 27th, aiming to promote awareness of the crucial roles MSMEs play in fostering innovation, job creation, and sustainability. This year’s theme was “Small Business, Big Change,” prompting members of the Building at Sunset community to share their motivations for embracing entrepreneurship.
Fina Bakani Fisher, the owner of Comfy Stays, operates a short-term rental business with two properties: a two-bedroom unit in Laucala Beach Estate priced at $200 per night and a five-bedroom property in Pacific Harbour at $750 per night. Initially driven by the desire for the flexibility to care for her children while contributing to the household income, her focus has shifted towards achieving financial freedom as her business evolves from a Facebook page to a forthcoming website.
Sonam Nair, managing director of Total Hygiene Solutions, launched her cleaning business during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, encouraged by commitments from businesses in need of cleaning services. Operating in the Suva-Nausori corridor, she aims to expand further. Her motivation stemmed from her personal goals and aspirations, bolstered by the increased demand for cleaning and fumigation services during the pandemic, along with inspiration drawn from the success of other women in business.
Veniana Ravesi, founder of Ravesi’s Kinetic Fitness, discovered her passion for fitness during high school, which evolved into a lifelong dedication to health and wellness. Recognizing the transformative impact of fitness extends beyond physical strength to fostering confidence and resilience, she established her fitness center to help others achieve their health goals, bringing over ten years of experience and a range of certifications in various fitness disciplines.
Kelera Lomaloma Mataika, founder of Atelier 153, an architectural design firm, emphasizes sustainability and innovation in construction while utilizing local and indigenous skills. Her venture into the Innovation in Construction Hub aims to address infrastructural challenges in Fiji by exploring new products and methodologies within the industry.
