The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has announced the closure of the Ellington wharf located in Rakiraki, effective from 5:00 PM on January 6 until further notice. This decision affects all parties involved in maritime activities, including ship owners, ship masters, shipping companies, marine service providers, and agents.

MSAF CEO Joeli Cawaki reported that the wharf has sustained significant damage that necessitated immediate action. During a visit by The Fiji Times at the time of the closure order, the Goundar Shipping vessel, Joseph P, was observed loading passengers, cargo, and vehicles at the wharf. However, large cracks and concrete breaks were visible on the wharf’s approach and structure, highlighting the safety concerns that prompted MSAF’s decision.

The Joseph P vessel successfully departed the wharf at 5:45 PM as operations continued until the closure.

This situation underscores the importance of safety in maritime infrastructure, reflecting proactive measures taken to prevent accidents and ensure the well-being of all dock users. As repairs are planned, this incident can also serve as a reminder of the need for regular inspections and maintenance of maritime facilities for the safety of all stakeholders involved.

In the future, with necessary repairs and improvements, the Ellington wharf can potentially enhance its resilience and efficiency, promoting safer travel and commerce for the community and beyond.
