Ellington Wharf Shutdown: What You Need to Know!

The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has announced the closure of the Ellington wharf in Rakiraki due to significant structural damage. MSAF CEO, Joeli Cawaki, emphasized that this order affects all parties involved, including ship owners, ship captains, shipping companies, and marine service providers.

The closure will take effect from 5:00 PM on January 6 and will remain in place until further notice. A recent inspection revealed large cracks in the approach to the jetty, which had been backfilled with sacks of soil and heavy rocks, as well as notable breaks in the concrete on the side of the wharf.

During a visit by The Fiji Times, the Goundar Shipping vessel, Joseph P, was seen loading passengers, cargo, and vehicles prior to its departure at 5:45 PM. The need for immediate safety measures underlines the importance of maintaining the integrity of maritime infrastructure, which is vital for the transport of goods and passengers.

This precautionary closure, while inconvenient for many, serves the greater purpose of prioritizing safety and preventing potential accidents. The focus now shifts to assessing the damage and determining the necessary repairs to restore the wharf for future operations. With the right efforts, the wharf can be revitalized and serve its community effectively once again.

Overall, this situation highlights the ongoing commitment of maritime authorities to uphold safety standards, ensuring that all maritime activities can continue in a secure environment.
