Ellington Wharf in Rakiraki has been officially reopened, providing a vital enhancement to transport connectivity and boosting economic activity in the Ra region. The reopening ceremony was conducted by Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, who emphasized the government’s dedication to upgrading essential transport infrastructure across the nation.
During his speech, Ro Filipe noted the strategic importance of the wharf, which connects Rakiraki to Nabouwalu. This connection is expected to facilitate easier passenger travel and the transport of goods, thereby supporting local businesses and surrounding communities. The upgraded facility aims to offer safer and more dependable services for both freight and passengers, ultimately improving market access and driving regional development.
In addition to the wharf improvements, the project encompassed road and safety upgrades. The Fiji Roads Authority played a significant role by sealing 366 meters of road within the jetty area and installing five street lights to enhance safety and accessibility for users.
The Minister expressed gratitude to the engineers, contractors, and community leaders who contributed to the successful completion of the project. He also urged all stakeholders to collaborate to ensure the long-term sustainability of the facility.
With its reopening, Ellington Wharf is poised to play a crucial role in promoting economic growth throughout Ra and its neighboring areas, reflecting a positive step forward for the region’s transport infrastructure and community development.
