Ellington Wharf in Rakiraki Shuts Down: What You Need to Know

The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has announced the closure of the Ellington wharf in Rakiraki due to significant structural damage. MSAF’s CEO, Joeli Cawaki, has issued this directive to all relevant parties, including ship owners, masters, shipping companies, marine service providers, and agents.

Effective from 5:00 PM on January 6, the wharf will remain closed until further notice. During a recent visit by The Fiji Times, it was observed that the Goundar Shipping vessel, Joseph P, was in the process of loading passengers, cargo, and vehicles before its departure at 5:45 PM. Notably, the approach to the jetty has developed large cracks, filled with sacks of soil and stones, alongside substantial breaks in the concrete structure of the wharf.

This decision underscores the importance of maritime safety and the need for immediate action to prevent accidents in the area. While the closure may disrupt transport temporarily, it reflects a proactive approach to ensure the safety of everyone involved in maritime activities.

As repairs and assessments take place, there is hope that once the necessary work is completed, the wharf will resume operations safely, ensuring continued support for the local economy and transportation needs of the community.
