Elijah Qiokata, a gold medalist from Oceania, celebrated a significant victory in the 70kg youth boxing category at the Golden Gloves competition held at the Stan Brown Boxing Gym in Walu Bay. He triumphed over Joe Nesta Kolitapa in what was a defining match, marking the end of his career in the youth category as he prepares to step into the Elite category.
Starting his boxing journey at the age of 13, Qiokata has built a commendable career in amateur boxing. As the leader of the Fiji Amateur Boxing team at the Youth & Junior Oceania Boxing Championships in Tahiti, he played a crucial role in securing a gold medal for Fiji.
At just 18 years old, Qiokata expressed immense pride in this win, acknowledging its special place as both his last victory of the year and his final match in the youth division. “I have come a long way fighting in amateur boxing. What I have learned over the year is discipline and how to test your strength in the ring,” Qiokata shared.
He drew inspiration from his grandfather, Marika Bola, a former Fiji Welterweights Champion, and is motivated to continue his family’s legacy of excellence in boxing. Reflecting on the intense competition with Kolitapa, Qiokata acknowledged their long-standing rivalry. “He has won three fights and I have won three; I am really thankful to get this win because it’s the last competition of the year 2024,” he stated.
Looking ahead, Qiokata has high hopes for the opportunities that 2025 will bring, underscoring his determination to succeed in the Elite category.
This victory not only highlights Qiokata’s talent and dedication but also sets a hopeful tone for his future in the boxing realm as he aims to forge his path following in the footsteps of those before him.
