Elijah Qiokata, an Oceania gold medalist, celebrated a notable victory in the 70kg youth category at the Golden Gloves competition, defeating Joe Nesta Kolitapa at Stan Brown Boxing Gym in Walu Bay yesterday. This win not only marks a significant achievement in Qiokata’s boxing journey but also signifies the end of his youth category career as he prepares to transition into the Elite category.

Qiokata, who began boxing at the age of 13, boasts an impressive amateur background. Under his leadership, the Fiji Amateur Boxing team won a gold medal at the Youth & Junior Oceania Boxing Championships in Tahiti. The 18-year-old expressed immense pride in clinching this victory, highlighting its special significance as both his final win of the year and his last in the youth category.

Reflecting on his journey, Qiokata stated, “I have come a long way fighting in Amateur boxing. What I have learned over the years is discipline and how to test your strength in the ring.” He draws inspiration from his grandfather, Marika Bola, a former Fiji Welterweights Champion, which fuels his desire to uphold his family’s legacy in boxing.

In his matchup with Kolitapa, Qiokata acknowledged the challenge, saying, “We have been fighting for a long time; we know each other’s skills.” Despite their previous encounters being split evenly, he expressed gratitude for this win, particularly as it concludes his competitive year on a high note, stating, “It’s the last competition of the year 2024.”

With an eye on 2025, Qiokata is optimistic about the opportunities that lie ahead, eager to make his mark in the Elite category.

This inspiring story exemplifies not just personal triumph and dedication but also the potential for future success as young athletes like Qiokata step into new levels of competition, carrying with them the legacy of their predecessors.
