Elijah Qiokata, an Oceania gold medalist, celebrated a noteworthy victory in the 70kg youth boxing category at the Golden Gloves competition held at the Stan Brown Boxing Gym in Walu Bay. He emerged victorious against Joe Nesta Kolitapa, bringing to a close his chapter in the youth category as he prepares to move up to the Elite class.

Beginning his boxing career at the young age of 13, Qiokata has built a strong foundation in Amateur Boxing. His recent leadership of the Fiji Amateur Boxing team at the Youth & Junior Oceania Boxing Championships in Tahiti culminated in a gold medal victory for the nation.

At just 18 years old, Qiokata expressed his pride in this achievement, marking it as both a pivotal moment in his sporting journey and a poignant farewell to his youth division. “I have come a long way in Amateur boxing, and what I have learned over the years is discipline and how to test my strength in the ring,” he noted.

Inspired by his grandfather, Marika Bola, a former Fiji Welterweights Champion, Qiokata is determined to uphold his family’s legacy of boxing excellence. Reflecting on his recent match, he acknowledged the tough competition with Kolitapa, as they were familiar with each other’s fighting styles. “He has won three fights and I have won three. I’m really thankful to get this win because it’s the last competition of the year 2024,” Qiokata remarked.

Looking ahead, Qiokata is enthusiastic about the opportunities that await him in 2025, ready to face new challenges in his boxing career.

This victory not only highlights Qiokata’s talent and commitment but also sets a hopeful tone for his future in the sport as he transitions into a more competitive arena. His dedication and strong family legacy play a crucial role in his ongoing journey, making him a promising athlete to watch in the coming years.
