The Ministry of Health has committed to resolving the ongoing elevator issues at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM) within the next eight weeks. Assistant Health Minister Penioni Ravunawa announced that three out of the four new elevators have already been successfully installed, with the remaining one from the East Wing lift now fully operational following administrative and management challenges.

Ravunawa acknowledged that the malfunctioning elevators had caused significant delays for patients awaiting surgery, a concern that has been raised frequently in recent months. He emphasized the ministry’s commitment to addressing these logistical issues to enhance overall service delivery at the hospital.

This proactive approach comes as part of a broader initiative by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, which has been actively upgrading healthcare infrastructure in Fiji. Historically, concerns have emerged regarding the reliability of the existing lifts, especially an older lift that had reportedly been in service for over 15 years, prompting calls for immediate action to resolve these problems.

The ministry’s efforts to install new elevators are seen as a vital step toward improving patient care and operational efficiency at CWM Hospital, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing healthcare services to meet community needs. As the new systems become fully operational, there is growing optimism that patients and healthcare workers will experience smoother operations, contributing to better healthcare outcomes.

This initiative highlights the government’s dedication to addressing infrastructure challenges in the healthcare sector, ultimately aiming to provide a more functional and supportive environment for patients and medical staff alike.
