Elevator Crisis: CWM Hospital Lifts Set for Major Overhaul

In response to significant criticism regarding the inoperable lifts at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM), the Ministry of Health (MOH) has announced that replacement lifts from the contracted supplier are due to arrive in Fiji next month. The MOH has acknowledged the concerns raised about the functionality of the patient lift.

Currently, the non-functional lift, which is situated in the west wing of CWM, is over 15 years old. It was originally purchased from the OTIS Elevator Company of New Zealand, whose engineers are presently on-site to address the malfunction and restore its operation. The MOH also confirmed that OTIS is contracted for the maintenance of the lifts within the hospital.

Recognizing the pressing nature of this issue, the Ministry identified the necessity to replace old lifts at CWM Hospital this year. With funding approved by the Government, they are actively engaged in the procurement process to replace all outdated lifts at the facility.

Importantly, the Ministry explained that hospital lifts are specifically designed to support the transportation of patients, medical staff, and essential medical equipment, highlighting the need for reliable and specialized machinery in healthcare settings. These lifts also must adhere to strict infection prevention and control requirements, with manufacturing contingent upon receipt of payment.

The MOH stated that the failure of the lift has adversely affected patient care in the designated ward, causing frustration for patients, family members, and healthcare workers alike. They are urging everyone to remain patient as they work to resolve these infrastructure issues and enhance healthcare services in the country.

This situation underscores the importance of maintaining suitable facilities for healthcare provision, and the commitment by the MOH to rectify these issues bodes well for the future of patient care in Fiji. With the anticipated arrival of new lifts, there is hope that the quality of service at CWM will improve significantly, ultimately benefiting patients and healthcare professionals.
