Cricket Fiji has engaged Sanjiv Dubey, a high-performance coach from Australia, to lead a short-term training camp for the national Under-19 cricket team. This initiative is part of their preparation for the East Asia Pacific World Cup qualifiers scheduled to take place in Japan this April.

Dubey, who is in his third year of collaboration with Cricket Fiji, emphasizes a holistic approach to player development with sessions focusing on enhancing core skills. He believes that significant progress in improving the players’ abilities is crucial for advancing Cricket Fiji’s profile on the international stage. “We are in the process of doing a lot of homework beyond just participating in tournaments; this is all part of our development strategy,” he mentioned in a recent interview.

The training camp kicked off at Albert Park in Suva and will run until January 25. Included in this training initiative is a focus on fostering an inclusive environment; the camp is also open to female players who are currently participating in the 2024/25 Women’s T20 League competition, highlighting Cricket Fiji’s commitment to promoting diversity within the sport.

Dubey expressed his appreciation for the young athletes he is working with, noting their good character and eagerness to learn, which makes the training experience enriching. The coach aims to refine the players’ techniques such that when they compete internationally, they perform with the professionalism expected at that level. “It’s a slow and long process, but if we follow it diligently, we can achieve our goals,” Dubey stated.

Overall, this training camp not only aims to prepare the Under-19 team for upcoming competitions but also signifies a positive step towards enhancing the capabilities of cricket in Fiji, promoting a supportive and developmental environment for all young cricketers. This initiative bodes well for the future of cricket in the region, as it seeks to elevate the sport and encourages the growth of talent and opportunities across the board.
