The ELEMENTZ Suva touch rugby team is setting its sights on the championship title following a commendable performance in the second round of the 2025 Suva Touch Rugby Association season, which took place last Saturday at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School grounds.
In the men’s open division, Elementz battled to a 4-4 draw against rivals 2Fresh, while their mixed open team achieved a decisive victory with a score of 5-1 over Roosters. These results keep Elementz firmly in contention for the title as the season progresses.
Reflecting on the team’s journey, key player Joshua Autar emphasized the goal of surpassing last year’s achievements where the team reached the finals in both the men’s and mixed masters’ divisions. “We are focusing on training from Monday to Thursday, honing our basic skills while improving teamwork,” Autar stated.
The team showcases a diverse age range among its players, from as young as 13 to as old as 41. Autar noted the excitement of having younger players join the ranks but acknowledged the challenges in helping them acclimate to the pace and demands of the game. Nevertheless, he remains optimistic about building their abilities over the long term, stating, “The focus is on long-term development and helping them grow.”
Even with obstacles such as the closure of Albert Park, Autar expresses confidence in the team’s ongoing improvement, stating, “We’ve been adapting to the changes and improving every week. We can only get better from here.”
Touch rugby remains an inclusive and accessible sport, welcoming players of various physical abilities. As Autar put it, “Touch rugby is perfect for anyone who loves rugby but doesn’t have the physical attributes for full-contact games, and it’s a great fitness booster.”
This season not only showcases the determination of the Elementz team but also contributes to the growing popularity and community spirit surrounding touch rugby in Fiji. Both the Suva Touch Rugby Association and local clubs are focusing on nurturing talent and fostering community involvement, promising a brighter future for the sport. The continuous support for and participation in local competitions creates an engaging environment for players and fans alike, showcasing the vibrant culture of rugby in Fiji.
